This weekend begins the “unofficial, official” start of Summer in the United States. Memorial Day was not created by the Federal Government so we could have a paid day off, eat barbecue, and start the Summer vacation season. It was a day created as a day for us to honor every soldier, regardless of skin color or gender, or denominational affiliation, who gave the ultimate sacrifice so we can continue to enjoy the freedoms we have here in the USA.
The slogan, “many gave some, some gave all,” sums up what my heart is pondering today. Jesus, Peter, James, John, and thousands of martyrs since the Resurrection of Jesus gave all so we can enjoy the fruit of eternal life. Jesus’ sacrifice bought our salvation; the early disciples’ sacrifice established His sacrifice as the Messianic confirmation that continues to bless us to this day. Are you willing to continue that sacrifice in order for others to find the way of eternal life, which can only come through the Blood of Jesus Christ, our Lord?
I am planning on eating barbecue on Monday. But this year, I will eat it with a greater appreciation of what that barbecue cost, not in terms of money, but in terms of sacrifice.
Have a great Memorial Day Weekend.
